UK Government sued for cover-up of public health risks caused by factory farming

Humane Being, the not-for-profit organization behind the campaign to end factory farming, has launched the first legal action of its kind against the UK government.

The case will be heard at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). He claims that the government is fully aware of the issue of industrial animal husbandry and the various threats it poses to human health.

Risks include the climate crisis (livestock farming contributes 14.5 percent of greenhouse gases, including powerful methane), increased antibiotic resistance (drugs are overused to prevent disease and promote faster animal growth), and potential future pandemics. (About 75 percent of new diseases are thought to be zoonotic, meaning they come from animals.)

Clash with the government

Humane Being’s appeal was brought after the Crown Court in London refused a judicial review of the government’s failure to act on factory farming.
