Want to lose extra pounds? Then reduce the amount of animal products consumed, experts say. They found that the vegan diet is the most effective in the fight against excess weight.
Eat less carbs, eat more protein, fast two days a week… These are just some of the popular weight loss tips that promise to effectively lose extra pounds. But scientists have now found that the best diet is vegan. The study found that people who lost weight by eating fewer animal products lost more pounds than those who ate meat and dairy products.
Investigator Ru-Ti Huang of E-Da Hospital in Taiwan and colleagues reviewed the results of 12 clinical studies on diets. These also included diets such as the popular Atkinson and those recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Data have been pooled and it has been shown that people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet achieve better weight loss results. Those who eliminated meat and dairy products (vegans) from their diet lost an average of 2.5 pounds more than those who ate meat products. Vegetarians who do not eat meat but consume eggs and dairy products, on the other hand, have lost an average of 1.4 kilograms more than those who have eaten meat.
Dr. Huang explains that vegans eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables and that this is most likely the key reason for greater weight loss. Whole grains and vegetables have a lower glycemic index (GI), which means they do not cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Fruits are rich in fiber, antioxidants and other substances that protect our body. At the same time, whole grains contain soluble fiber, which causes food to be excreted later – which ensures better digestion. In this way, nutrients are also better absorbed in the gut. Several previous studies have shown that eating more fiber helps in losing excess weight. “A vegetarian diet is more effective than a non-vegetarian diet,” concludes Dr. Huang.
The results of the study were published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
