What kind of food did they eat in the Middle Ages?

The population of all classes in the Middle Ages liked to eat and drink abundantly, especially when better times came after years of famine and scarcity. The Middle Ages did not know all the dishes we prepare today in modern home cooking. They did not know some basic ingredients like corn, potatoes, beans, etc. Cereals, legumes (peas, beans, lentils, buckwheat), carrots, cucumbers, radishes, onions, garlic, poppies, cabbage, beets and pumpkins were the most popular.

They grew fruits such as grapes, apples, plums, peaches, cherries, sour cherries and walnuts. Of course, they were also engaged in agriculture, where they raised cattle, pigs, poultry and sheep. Since, of course, they did not have tractors at that time, they mainly used cattle for traction purposes. It also served them as a source of milk, skin and horns.

The peasant population did not eat much meat and fish, as this alone represented a more luxurious food, which they often had to give as a tithe to their masters. Farmers ate porridge, cheese and milk more often.

The nobility, unlike the peasants, ate more meat and more varied food. They also used various spices, most commonly pepper and saffron. They also ate honey. All of these were luxury goods that were not accessible to ordinary people. The castle lords loved hunting and fishing. In cases when a guest came to the castle, a variety of rich dishes were prepared in the castle kitchen.

In the Middle Ages, food was cooked in separate containers in bread ovens. The dishes were organic, healthy and fairly simple. Interestingly, the same dishes could be prepared differently in different provinces. The cooks at the time knew how to prepare delicious and healthy meals that provided enough nutrients for the body, despite not knowing what vitamins, minerals and protein meant.
