An additive or food additive is a chemical additive to a food that is used for the purpose of preserving, thickening or diluting, coloring or “adding” flavorings to it.

Additive codes are most often given as “E ***” (E + three-digit number).

Little is known about the impact of additives on human health. Some research has shown that individual additives are very dangerous and harmful to health.

Each additive is listed with a number. In Europe, an E-number system has been set up for all permitted additives. The Codex Alimentarius system contains international identifications of all additives, regardless of marketing authorizations.

Food additives can be divided into the following groups:

Acids are added for their pungent taste, as well as antioxidants and preservatives. Commonly used: vinegar, citric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, fumaric acid, lactic acid.

Acidity regulators change and regulate the acidity or alkalinity of foods.

The stick preservatives prevent the powders from sticking to and sticking together.

Anti-foaming agents reduce or prevent foaming of food.

Antioxidants are used as preservatives as they prevent oxidation of foods.

Rising agents increase the volume of food while maintaining nutritional value.

Nutritional dyes are added to foods for a more attractive appearance

Emulsifiers allow water and oils to remain homogenized (example: milk) and in an emulsion (example: mayonnaise, ice cream).

Flavor enhancers accentuate existing food flavors.

Moisture preservatives prevent food from drying out.

Preservatives prevent food from spoiling due to mold, bacteria and other microorganisms.

Stabilizers, thickeners and gelling agents give foods a firmer structure.

Sweeteners are given to foods because of their taste. Sweeteners replace sugar due to their low caloric value.

E102 tartazine
Causes allergies, asthma attacks, migraines, blurred vision, itching, inflammation of the nasal mucosa, scarlet skin spots. It is associated with thyroid tumors and chromosome damage. It is especially dangerous for people who are hypersensitive to aspirin and for asthmatics. In combination with E210 it causes hyperactivity in children.

E110 orange dye FCF
It causes stomach problems, nausea, vomiting, hives-like skin rashes, skin swellings, allergies, kidney tumors, chromosome damage, abdominal pain, indigestion, food resistance. It has been linked to tumors in experimental animals. Especially not recommended for people hypersensitive to aspirin. Causes hyperactivity in children.

E131 blue dye V
Causes urticaria-like skin rashes, itching, nausea, vomiting, blood pressure disorders, shivering and difficulty breathing and other allergic reactions. Causes hyperactivity in children.

E132 indigotine, same as E131.
They associate it with brain tumors.

E173 aluminum
It causes many allergic reactions, associates it with Alzheimer’s disease, causes osteoporosis.

E249 K nitrite
Carcinogenic. Causes breathing problems, dizziness and headache.

E250 On nitrite
Proven carcinogenic. Causes hyperactivity.

E310 propyl gallate
It causes irritation of the stomach or skin, and blood disorders (methemoglobinemia). Potentially carcinogenic.

E311 octyl gallate same as E310.

E312 dodecyl gallate same as E310.

E620 glutamic acid same as E621.

E621 monosodium glutamate
It causes headache, burning and tingling sensation in the neck and forearms, facial tension, thirst, cold sweat, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, heart rhythm disorders. Causes brain damage in laboratory animals.

E622 monopotassium glutamate same as E621.

E950 acesulfame K
It causes cancer in experimental animals, has a detrimental effect on the thyroid gland.

E951 aspartame
Causes headache (also very severe) and migraine, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, loss of limb control, blurred vision, blindness, memory loss, slurred speech, depression, often leading to suicidal tendencies, hyperactivity, intestinal and gastric disorders, epileptic seizures , skin lesions, rashes, anxiety attacks, muscle and joint pain, numbness, mood swings, fatigue, menstrual cramps (even outside the cycle), hearing loss or ringing in the ears, loss or change in taste, heart-like symptoms, asthma , chest tightness. Chronic consequences to which aspartame significantly contributes: multiple sclerosis, hormonal problems, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, hypoglycemia, brain damage (tumors), neuro-endocrine disorders.

E952 cyclamate
It causes migraines, is potentially carcinogenic, causes cancer and testicular damage in experimental animals.

E954 saccharin
Potentially carcinogenic. Caused cancer in experimental animals.

E924 K bromate
In large quantities it causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain. Caused cancer in experimental animals.

Harmful additives. Try to avoid them altogether, if that doesn’t work, keep the quantities to a minimum.

E122 azorubin
Causes urticaria-like skin rashes and water retention. It is especially not recommended for people hypersensitive to aspirin and for asthmatics. Causes hyperactivity in children.

E123 amaranth
May cause asthma, eczema and hyperactivity. In laboratory animals caused damage and death of embryos. Potentially carcinogenic.

E127 erythrosine
It has been linked to thyroid tumors and chromosome damage.

E235 natamycin
Causes nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, skin irritation.

E251 On nitrate
Potentially dangerous because it is converted to nitrite in the body.

E252 K nitrate
Prolonged consumption of even small amounts can cause anemia and inflammation of the kidneys. If ingested in large quantities, it can cause severe abdominal pain, vomiting, muscle weakness, dizziness and irregular heartbeat. In some cases, it is converted in the stomach to nitrite, which is potentially carcinogenic.

E320 butyl hydroxyanisole (BHA)
Causes allergic reactions and hyperactivity. Potentially carcinogenic, causes cancer in experimental animals.

E321 butyl hydroxytoulene (BHT) same as E320.

E407 carrageenan
It is associated with cancer and stomach ulcers.

E421 mannitol
Potentially allergenic. Causes diarrhea, kidney problems, nausea, vomiting.

E508 K chloride
In large quantities it causes stomach ulcers.

E553 (b) talc
It is associated with stomach cancer.

Conditionally harmful additives. Risk groups should avoid them altogether. It is also advisable for everyone else to avoid them.

E100 curcumin
Not recommended in case of gallstones, jaundice, colic and liver poisoning.

E104 quinoline blush
It causes hyperactivity in children and dermatitis.

E107 blush 7G
It causes allergic reactions in asthmatics and hyperactivity in children.

E124 red dye R4
Causes allergic reactions, especially in people hypersensitive to aspirin and asthmatics.

E129 red AC dye
Causes allergic reactions, especially in people with sensitive skin. It has been linked to cancer in experimental animals.

E155 brown dye HT
It causes allergic reactions in asthmatics and people hypersensitive to aspirin. Causes skin hypersensitivity.

E174 silver
Prolonged regular consumption can cause kidney damage, as well as blue-gray color of the eyes, nose, nostrils, throat and skin.

E180 ruby
It worsens asthma symptoms, inflammation of the nasal mucosa and hives.

E210 benzoic acid
Causes skin rashes similar to hives, asthma, neurological disorders. It causes stomach problems in large quantities. In combination with E102 it causes very severe hyperactivity in children.

E211 On benzoate
It can cause worsening of symptoms in asthmatics and those who are hypersensitive to aspirin and those with hives, especially in combination with E102. Causes hyperactivity in children.

E212 K benzoate same as E211.

E213 Ca benzoate same as E211.

E635 disodium 5-ribonucleotide
It is associated with skin rashes up to 30 hours after ingestion (depending on the sensitivity of the individual).

1510 ethanol
Alcohol. Adverse effects are well known.

Less harmful, but not safe additives. Use with caution.

E120 carminic acid
Causes hyperactivity in children.

E128 red dye 2G
It causes problems related to hemoglobin and hyperactivity in children.

E153 soot black dye
Potentially carcinogenic. Banned in the US.

E154 brown dye FK
Causes hyperactivity in children.

E160 (b) anato
It causes hives. May cause hyperactivity in children.

E216 propyl p-hydroxybenzoate
Causes allergic reactions.

E218 methyl p-hydroxybenzoate
Causes allergic reactions, especially on the skin.

E220 sulfur dioxide
It causes asthma attacks, destroys vitamin B. Hard to digest for people with kidney damage.

E221 On sulphite same as E220.

E222 On hydrogen sulfite same as E220.

E223 On metabisulfite same as E220.

E224 K metabisulfite same as E220.

E225 K sulfite same as E220.

E228 K hydrogen sulfite same as E220.

E264 ammonium acetate
Causes nausea and vomiting.

E281 On propionate
They associate it with migraines.

Causes nausea and vomiting. The 5g dose is lethal.

E334 tartaric acid
In large quantities it causes intestinal catarrh.

E412 guar tires
Causes nausea, bloating and cramps.

E420 sorbitol
In large quantities it can cause winds and has a laxative effect.

E422 glycerol
In large quantities it causes headache, thirst, nausea and high blood sugar.

E440 (a) pectin
It causes winds in large quantities.

E441 gelatin
Obtained from animal sources are associated with the possibility of BSE infection (mad cow disease).

E503 ammonium carbonate
Irritating to mucous membranes.

E626 guanylic acid
May cause gout.
