Scientists have found out why red meat harms us…!!!

Red meat is not good for our heart and blood vessels, US scientists warn. Bacteria break it down to form a gas that the liver converts into a dangerous chemical that can lead to death.

A study revealed in the journal Nature Medicine reveals that bacteria in the gut break down carnitine, which is found in red meat. This is thought to trigger a chain of events that bring higher cholesterol levels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Diabetologists therefore warn that eating meat high in carnitine is a threat to health, and similar studies are expected to increase. In the UK, the government therefore recommends a maximum of 70 grams of red meat per day, which in practice means two slices of bacon. Saturated fats and the way processed meat is fed contribute to heart problems, they say.

“The level of cholesterol and saturated fat in lean red meat is not so high, and something else contributes to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease,” said Stanley Hazen, who led the study. This produces gas, which the liver converts into a chemical called TMAO, which has been linked to the accumulation of fat deposits in blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease and death.

Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic warns that the hazardous chemical is often overlooked: “It’s practically a waste, but it significantly affects cholesterol metabolism and the effect of cholesterol buildup. Our findings support the idea that it’s better to eat less red meat,” he said. and adds that he used to eat red meat himself almost every day, but now he only indulges in it once every two weeks.

The findings also highlighted the idea that it would make sense to regulate the balance of bacteria in the gut with probiotics, as reducing them also means less risk when eating red meat.
