Vitamin supplements just a waste of money?

There is growing evidence that consuming vitamins in the form of dietary supplements is completely useless. We spend billions of euros a year on vitamins and minerals in the form of capsules and tablets, and their consumption has become such an everyday task, quite similar to basic hygiene.

But a comparison of data from research conducted between 2012 and 2017 shows that multivitamins, vitamin C, D and calcium have only a small and even insignificant impact on the health of those who consume them. There are also no indications to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, protect against stroke or other diseases. Researchers were surprised at the negligible benefits of taking supplements. Folic acid and vitamin B9 did not reduce the risk of heart disease, while vitamin B3 or niacin was even shown to increase health problems and premature death.

Even antioxidants didn’t do any better. Vitamin C has not been shown to be helpful against the common cold, while zinc has helped to overcome it. Adding vitamin A for eyesight, vitamin B for energy and vitamin C for immunity is pure nonsense, they claim. Vitamin D is the only one recommended for folic acid intake, as it is difficult to get from the diet, but it is crucial for calcium absorption for healthy and strong bones. It is produced during sun exposure, which is difficult in the winter months. Vitamins A, C and E and antioxidants are sufficiently present in fruits and vegetables, especially berries.

Excess with the addition of antioxidants is bad for health and is strongly associated with some types of cancer, such as lung cancer, overdosing on vitamin C means nothing for colds and boosts immunity, but helps in the formation of kidney stones. Instead, it is much better to eat more citrus and strawberries. Instead of adding vitamin B3, eat tuna, salmon and beetroot and you will get enough of it. Dietary supplements not only do not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but even link them to internal bleeding, liver problems and inflammation.

Probiotics are also expensive and completely unnecessary. Enjoy yogurt and good bacteria will flourish. Be sure to enjoy folic acid if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as this essential nutrient helps create new cells, which pregnant women still desperately need, according to the study’s authors, published in the American College of Cardiology.
